Day 135 - Reading Quizzes going up... On a Monday

Today in WHAP we took our reading quiz. I liked the MC selection again, and I can't tell if in these past quizzes they are easier or I'm just better. Hopefully I'm better. The SARs weren't awful, but they weren't the greatest either. Same deal with the key term. Here is my reflection for the movie Valkyrie, a movie about a plot to overthrow Hitler. Also included are some of my notes over the movie, which I linked earlier. Tonight, we have a crash course video, but lets face it; the only crash people care about right now is the crash of the comet into tilted. 5 hours left until Season 4... Don't forget to look at the DBQ revision if you're interested; it's an...interesting prompt for us. I don't normally do a quote of the day but for today I have one - "Asher, you don't take the reading quiz... the reading quiz takes you," - Jack Corrales 2018 With that, the bell rang and we were dismissed. Until Tomorrow!

Day 134 - More DBQ

Today in WHAP we continued talking about the DBQ. We started looking over our documents from the DBQ, and we eventually prepared another argument, except using POV (HIPP) analysis to try and get that missed point. We also talked about the contextualization again, and Mr. Profitt continued saying how while the 4 sentence formula can be used to create a successful contextualization, you have to add in other stuff as well. Now for Infinity War (no spoilers)... the movie was really good and I felt like they did a good job incorporating all the characters and giving everyone the spotlight at some point, so that it was balanced between all the different heroes. I'd highly recommend watching it. We have a reading quiz on Monday, so don't forget to study for that. With that, the bell rang and we were dismissed. Until Monday!

133 - Broken Clickers

Today in WHAP we talked about the DBQ. So initially we were supposed to take a clicker quiz today, but it appears that Mr. Carroll may have broken them when he knocked them over the other day. Mr. Profitt seemed a little peeved at first but then seemed to become more happier about the matter once he realized that he may get to splurge and "treat himself" to some new clickers. We received our DBQs back today and I'll be honest, there were a lot of very...perturbed people once they received their exam. I was personally happy with a phat 4, and with the time crunch points that's an 88 so that's cool with me. Also,  we can now do corrections over the DBQ, but in doing so we have many different options on which grade we want to replace or add. It's a little confusing so I'm not gonna try to explain it, but just be aware of the opportunity. After that, Mr. Profitt showed how the most missed points were the POV and the contextualization. We essentially talk

Day 132 - I'm Stallin

Today in WHAP we had a guest lecture on communism from Mr. Eppig. Before we get started on this, I have a statement to make. An Open Letter to Mr. Profitt - Now, I know that over here at WHAPJACK we tend to take a lot of shots at Mr. Profitt with little snarky remarks here and there, to liven up the atmosphere. However, right now I'd like to thank Mr. Profitt. Why, you may ask? Well, the reason is that Mr. Profitt didn't schedule a reading quiz on Friday, allowing me to be able to watch the premiere of Avengers: Infinity War  tomorrow night instead of having to study for a reading quiz. So, thank you Mr. Profitt for your helpful scheduling. Much appreciated! Best wishes, Jack Corrales. Mr. Eppig started class off with a power point presentation, using the quote "I believe in one thing only, the power of human will." The first slide was Collectivization, which had three subsections apart of it: The Five Year Plan, De-Kulakization, and Kokholz. The Five Year Plan

Day 131 - Crash Course

Today in WHAP we took a clicker quiz. We started class off by looking at a gas mask form Silas' grandfather. It looked a little creepy, and honestly I personally doubted the effectiveness of it, meaning I wouldn't want to stake my life upon the mask holding up. After that, we had a brief table team review. It's important to note that for this last week of tables, we got to pick them ourselves, so I reunited with Matt Owens and John Holloran III and added in Asher Smith '20, someone whom I've never had the good fortune(or misfortune) to sit with this year. We took the quiz and didn't get the bonus point this time. I would draw the conclusion that people have stopped reading Strayer at this point, as that question was easily the most missed one of them all. After this, Mr. Profitt announced that Mr. Eppig will be our guest speaker tomorrow during WHAP, covering the subject of communism. Quite frankly, I'm especially interested as no one, not even Mr. P

Days 128-130 - VALKYRIE

So this is a WHAP blog from over the weekend, and essentially it's covering the movie summary I did over Valkyrie. I'm attaching the summary of the movie below, and later this week (no later than Sunday) I will have posted the reflection as well. I'd recommend reading the summary, letting it sink in, and then reading the reflection/fact checking when that comes out. Of course, as interesting as my summary is the movie is much better, so I'd advocate watching that, using my notes as a supplement to your viewing experience. Here is the Summary Enjoy!

Day 127 - WHAP Quiz

Today in WHAP we took a Strayer quiz. After surveying the room, the results were pretty mixed. Some people said the quiz was difficult, and some felt it was the easiest quiz all year. I think the line was drawn there were people that studied felt it was easy, and those who winged it probably felt it was hard. The MC were the easiest they were all year, so that was nice. To be quiet frank, I haven't gotten that many correct in a while. Don't forget, there are corrections Tuesday. As Mr. Profitt said, it's going to be quite the "workend". With that, the bell rang and we were dismissed. Until Tuesday!

Day 126 - Notes

Today in WHAP we took notes. So first, we started class off by talking about social democracy (not democratic socialism), which can be summed up by saying reform but don't reject. Fascism, something that was popular in Italy around WWI, could be described by the terms of militarism, imperialism, and nationalistic viewpoint. Then, we talked about the New Deal, which was FDR's plan to help the US out of the depression. It involved the Government pouring cash into the economy, accepting that they may temporarily lose money while doing this. Then, when the market is at a high point, they'll make that money back. In this same section, we also learned that Hellen Keller was a big o'l communist. The more ya know... So Herbert Hoover, the president before FDR wasn't a fan of this investing in the market thing, as he said that eventually the market would return. Sounds like a familiar sports fanbase I know that says "Trust the Process." The only process the

Day 125 - Clicker Quiz

Today in WHAP we took a clicker quiz over WWII So the main thing we did in class today was the clicker quiz, but some other morsels of information were picked up along the way so I'll mention those as well. I didn't find the quiz today very difficult, but overall our class didn't do to well, with many questions having divided answers, almost guaranteeing that we didn't get that extra point. I'd chalk that up to a lot of people watching the video the first night, then forgetting about it over Tuesday, then coming into class today and being like uhhhhhhhh. So unlike what your grade school teachers may have told you, dates aren't simple. Especially in the example of WWII, it's difficult to pin down the exact dates for the start, end, etc. It become a periodization issue when you try to define the war in such rigid characteristics like that. So Japan invaded China during this time, and they made a bunch of unfair demands to China. Seems like China is on

Day 124 - WWI Continued

Today in WHAP we continued our discussion on WWI. So briefly we talked about Imperialism and Nationalism at the beginning of class, which then fills out the MAIN acronym. Imperialism is related through how Germany felt it was treated like a second class power by the other nations, and Nationalism is what prompted other countries to attempt to gain more land for their country. So the Treaty of Versailles was the treaty signed after WWI. Before I get into that, I'm gonna show the effects of the war. Many cities and houses were destroyed in the combat, making it difficult to settle back in after the war was over. Millions of civilians and soldiers also died in the combat from. Also, many new nations were formed after the war. In the Treaty, all the other nations were essentially trying to "git" Germany. They were trying to pin the blame on them, and as a result the treaty was quite unfair for Germany, with Germany being forced to admit that they were to blame for the w

Day 123 - World Wars

Today in WHAP we talked about WWI. So essentially the acronym MAIN depicts the causes of how WWI started, with M meaning militarism and A being alliances. That was as far as we got today. To start off this blog, Mr. Profitt was talking about Risk, the board game, for many example during class today. I just want to take this time to state that I'm an AMAZING Risk player. I've gone undefeated throughout my whole career, whether that be from people quitting from boredom or being tactically outmaneuvered. Onward to the lecture. So with a alleged telegram from Germany to Mexico saying that the Germans wanted Mexico to invade the US, the US became a little suspicious of Germany. This then made it an easy sell when Germany destroyed a passenger ship with Americans on board for the Americans to join the war against the Germans. When the Americans finally made it to the battlefront, they were pretty late in the war. However, in order for the generals to gain more experience, the

Day 122 - Pink Floyd

Today in WHAP we talked about WWI. First, we listened to two songs about the war. The first one was pretty pro war while the second one, by Pink Floyd, was definitely displaying the negative aspects of the war. Essentially what that led us into was that initially, Britain was mad hyped about the war, thinking it would finally be a time to end all the hostility going on in Europe at the time. Then, as time passed, they realized exactly what they'd gotten themselves into and so they didn't really want to fight anymore. We ended up not taking the clicker quiz scheduled for today, so that was pretty nice. It'd be nicer if it went in as a 100 for everyone, but I digress. We then talked about some of the facts about the war. The war took place in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. It was fought by the Allied Powers (led by Britain) and the Central Powers (led by Germany). The allies won the war, but at the cost of 8 million overall soldier casualties and 6 million civil

Day 121 - If the Shoe Fits

Today in WHAP we were visited by Mr. Shoemaker (Coach Shoemaker). First, we filled part of our scantron for the AP exam. It was a tedious process, so I'm glad we got it out of the way before the day of the exam. As I've been studying the patterns Mr. Profitt makes the tests in, I was able to predict the questions for the exam and get a head start on the MC exam, allowing me to allott more time elsewhere. After this, Shoe came in to talk to us about the exams. Basically, on the day of the AP test for WHAP you don't have to come back to school after, but if you reeealy want to then you can come back. I think it's kind of a no-brainer to head on home and get some rest/victory royales, but circumstances could dictate a different outcome for that situation. He then started talking about application to colleges. Using the example of Harvard, he talked about how even though you may be perfectly qualified for Harvard, if you don't match whatever profile they want that

Day 120 - EIGO

Image
Today in WHAP we talked about stuff leading into our next unit. First, we took a clicker quiz over the material last night. Let's hope its just an E grade. Now, you may be wondering why I named my blog today EIGO. It's just a little acronym I made up that stands for Everything In Genuine Openness, a motto for the blog. I made it up all by myself. My copyright. Trademarked. After this, we watched a clip from the movies "The Devil's Advocate," and watched a scene with Keanu Reeves talking to the devil. Essentially, Keanu never has lost a court case but then loses one because the devil (his father) stops helping him. The devil then gives a speech about how the 20th century was essentially his, and now he's moving into the prime of his time, since he's inspired this age of self-sufficient humans. The most notable line for me was from Keanu where he said "I Win...I don't lose." This was notable for me because it's very similar to the moto

Day 119 - The Notorious DBQ

Image
Today in WHAP we took our DBQ. I didn't think it was too difficult, and I can guarantee myself that I got at least 4 points so that's kinda nice. I also answered the prompt this time so that was nice too. Time, like with most essays, is the largest issue with long in class essays. And of course, most people generally use every single moment for the exam. So it can be problematic when  time is...taken from us and we lose this time on the exam. The Class worrying about having enough time as Mr. Profitt drones on On the plus side, Mr. Profitt mentioned a helpful revision process so maybe we'll get to partake in that.  I'm sure, as in most classes, when we have a large test one day, there is no homework that night. If you were to assume that in WHAP, however, you'd be completely incorrect. I see how it is. Check Moodle. With that, the bell rang and we were dismissed. Until Tomorrow!

Day 118 - DBQ Prep

Today in WHAP we started to prepare for the DBQ essay. So first off, I won't be at school tomorrow due to Roundup obligations, so there will probably not be a WHAP blog tomorrow. I know, you wonder where you can get that daily entertainment without WHAPJACK, but I think Ninja's streaming tomorrow so we all good. I finally received my LEQ revisions back, and I gotta say it's amazing what that can do for your grade. Now I just have to correct the MC and I may have something to work with. We started class of with listening to "I believe I can Fly" by R. Kelley, with the idea that we can still succeed even though many of us took a drubbing on that MC exam yesterday. I think a more accurate song would have been "Free Falling" by Tom Petty, as that's a more realistic depiction of our grades yesterday, but that's just my opinion. This song seems extremely motivational and inspirational, and I'm sure everyone that has heard it until today has

Day 117 - A Day of L's

Today in WHAP we took our mastery exam. To be quite frank, I thought this exam was pretty difficult for a MC exam. By this point, the grades are in so you know if you've got a lot of corrections in your future. I have a lot of corrections in my future, but whats new? My feelings about the MC exam in general are the same as the last one, so if you're interested in refreshing yourself over that check out my past blog. I certainly enjoyed getting our MC grade within 10 minutes of finishing the exam, hopefully that anti-procrastination spirit moves over into logging other mastery grades, specifically revisions. I guess you could start studying for your DBQ essay tonight, but to be real I think the whole sophomore class, regs or Pre-AP, have a chem test tomorrow (Double Jeopardy), so that's most people's number one priority. With that, the bell rang and we were dismissed. Until Tomorrow!

Day 116 - The Calm Before the Storm

Today in WHAP we prepared for our mastery exam. Picture this...it's Easter Sunday. The family is gathered around a table, jovially enjoying a meal, eating delicious Easter treats. It seems like a joyful day, incapable of sorrow. But wait, zoom in further and in a dark corner of the dusty room sits a fellow, holding a review (of the Princeton variety) and an ipad in his hands. He furiously completes practice exams, knowing that he must complete 40 questions in 45 minutes. He's been working on different exams for weeks now, preparing for this final mastery exam. It's not enjoyable, but there is some sort of motivation for him if he aces this exam. Fast forward a few days, and this same fellow walks into his WHAP class, oozing confidence. He aces all of the multiple choice review questions. Confidently striding out of class, he knows he'll ace the exam. Then, a few hours later, he receive an email. Probably just a reminder for the exam, he figures, and chuckles at th
