Day 101 - Clicker Quiz

Today in WHAP we took a clicker quiz. Class started off with Garrett and Mr. Profitt debating about something. I don't know exactly what as I chose to utilize the time for study instead of listening to a debate. The quiz was over Latin America revolutions, and essentially what we went over during the quiz was how they all had the 3 classes of the patriarchy, the church, and the crown that would rule over them. This is going to be a very short entry as I didn't get notes on the Clicker Quiz, and we didn't have time to really start the lecture. With that, the bell rang and we were dismissed. Get some corrections done and get some rest tomorrow. Until Thursday!

Day 100 - Class Divisions

Today in WHAP we took a clicker quiz and some notes. First things first, this is day 100 of WHAP Jack, so self-pat on the back for this one. I never really envisioned myself as a blogger, but this ended up working out pretty well for me and easily became a part of my daily routine. To 100 more (morel like 50 more). Don't forget that Donahue is our sub for next week. Seems like next week in class will be WHAP, but without the AP. So just WH. Anyways, we took a clicker quiz over the French Revolution. This didn't count as a grade, but what I took away from it was that the French Revolution was more revolutionary than the American Revolution, because in the French Revolution they wanted to change a lot more than the Americans did. We then moved onto a real clicker quiz, which was a grade. I'll be honest here, I watched the wrong CC video on this one so I'll claim credit for not getting the class bonus (even though I wasn't the only one). Shout out to Will Florer

Day 99 - Social Studies

Today in WHAP we talked about the gun control problem. We did not not take the clicker quiz today, but even if you didn't watch it you should watch it just to make sure you get that information. For respect purposes, I won't go over any of the stories told in class, but today we were talking about people's personal experiences with guns, and just in general how you can't really read someone to know if they are capable of such heinous acts. Garrett made the point that for someone to commit a school shooting or other event, there would have to be something wrong mentally for them to commit something like that. That's definitely true, but what also has to be taken into account is circumstances around the acts. Just like Father Leise said in his homily about Connor, everyone has moments of weakness. I could see a possibility where someone, in a moment of weakness, may make a bad choice involving a gun. Anyways, that's just something for your reflection over

Day 98 - Double Clicker Quizzes

Today in WHAP we took two clicker quizzes. We started off with Mr. Profitt proposing the idea of not having study time before the quiz, because that's what Mr. Yo's class does. I'm against this idea, because without this time how would I be able to review the video again, and make it fresh in my mind before the quiz? The answer to that is I couldn't, and I'm sure others also feel the same way, as it can't hurt to review more. If, however, we decide to stick to that line of logic, one of Mr. Yo's classes doesn't write HTS', only IDs, so I'd be all for it if we decided to drop the HTS. The quiz wasn't hard despite being 10 questions, and we did get the bonus, so everyone was guaranteed a 100. Below, though, I'm going over what we talked about during the quiz since we spent most of class talking about various clicker quiz answers. The organization of the data is when it was said in class, not chronologically. Essentially, Austria cause

Day 97 - Gunpowder

Today in WHAP we had a lesson about gunpowder from Mr. Pichon. So at the beginning of the class, Mr. Pichon couldn't get his computer to work, until Asher Smith, savior of sixth period, discovered that the charger wasn't plugged into the wall. Great job buddy. After this, Mr. Pichon started recapping what we learned from the first lesson. That would be stuff like the 3 P's (about power). We then started talking about the beginnings of guns. Essentially they weren't very accurate at the beginning, but were really just used because they were cost efficient (in training costs). They weren't even considered more lethal (at first) than say a crossbow, but because of lack of maintenance and longevity it was better to have a gun. I thought it was kinda neat how the crossbow went through all the armor of the horse and the guy, but if you really think about it that bolt must have been moving really fast to go through all that. After talking about that, we moved onto

Day 96 - A Real Clicker Quiz

Today in WHAP we took a quiz over this weekends reading assignment. So to start out class, we went over the calendar for these next few weeks. Over this week, we really just have some CC videos, so no Strayer or anything like that. I noticed that there are some neat O-Point activities, so keep an eye out for those. We also learned from today that Mr. Profitt will be taking a hiatus the week before Spring break, to go visit Rome and Italy, essentially all the place we are currently learning about. Seems like a good location for a WHAP field trip, but I digress. He said that our sub will most likely be MR. DONAHUE during this time. We then prepared for our clicker quiz, that was actually a quiz grade. I wish it was worth say 10/10 instead of 5/5 so it effected my grade a bit more, but I suppose I'll take what I can get. We did not get the bonus, but I had a revelation about clicker quizzes today in class. I noticed that I don't generally struggle with a question unless Mr.

Day 95 - LEQ

Today in WHAP we took the LEQ. I felt pretty good about today's essay, as I was able to use some of the evidence I knew pretty well, so because of that my points were better than if I'd gotten some other topics, like anything about Islam. However, as of the time I'm publishing this, doubt has crept into my mind on my prompt, fearing that I committed one of the worst possible WHAP crimes... I (maybe) didn’t answer the prompt, but hopefully I'm incorrect. My essay was longer than usual, coming in at 2 front and back pages, but that really doesn’t mean anything because length doesn’t necessarily equate to score. Don’t forget to check moodle over the weekend for WHAP homework, and look forward to the fact that Mr. Pishion (spelling probably wrong) is coming on Wednesday, so that will hopefully be another interesting class on warfare. Try and get some over this long weekend, because I know you probably didn’t get any sleep this week. With that, the bell rang and we w

Day 94 - The Dreaded MC

Today in WHAP we took our MC exam! After taking it, I have some mixed feelings about the results.I did alright, snagging a good enough grade to scavenge a good grade with corrections. However, I have some opinions about the exam, which I will go into down below. It seems like anyone I talked to about their score pretty much kept their same scores form the previous exams, myself included. Meaning, for all three exams, they've gotten the same grades, whether they repeatedly get C's or A's or B's... you get the picture. In my case, I'm in the B-C area and I've been trying to get that up to the high B and A area, and really no matter the study habits I'm changing, my grades don't seem to change. I mean I don't think I've every been better prepared in terms of knowing the general outline, the broad history, and yet I got the same grade. And on top of that, I studied in advance, and didn't wait until the last minute, so in theory that formula

Day 93 - The Qualm Before the Storm

Today in WHAP we had our final class day of review before the dreaded mastery exams. We started class of by going over a questionnaire that only one person answered...myself :D Anyways, we started off class by going over Matt's intro paragraph. The issue with his, and also Antonio's, were that they weren't really making CCOT arguments, but more like cause and effects. I personally am glad we did this today because it's going to help me avoid that one pitfall on Friday. After looking at both of their's, we moved onto John Patee's. He probably got the thesis point, as his CCOT argument was legit, but he used an incorrect date. Mr. Profitt thought that it would probably be overlooked by the College Board though. After this, we were jusdt going over the ways to study for the MC, which I'm sure you have started studying for already. Basically, check out Freeman pedia, the concept outline, Mr. yo's 200 page PowerPoint, and then I heard from someone toda

Day 92 - Impending Doom

Today in WHAP we continued studying for our mastery exams on Thursday/Friday. We started class off by going over some MC questions. Unfortunately for the fate of the class, only about a third of the class got the first question correct. Make sure to brush up on those early periods so there aren't any surprises on the test. Also, Mr. Profitt announced that 20 questions will be about periods 1-2, which is nearly 50 percent of the test, so especially make srue to review those units. We then moved into talking about the Causation format, which is categorizing (from this...to this), then explaining. 1 nifty little point Mr. Profitt made was that we should make it VERY obvious when we are starting something, so clearly emphasizing when we are stating a continuity/change, so that he only needs to check to see if it's historically accurate, instead of being forced to make some assumptions. We ended class by making our own lil' intro paragraphs, and we did this until the end

Day 91 - Sea-Caught Prep

Today in WHAP we went over CCOT essays. First, Mr. Profitt started out by reminding us on how to study for a multiple choice exam. He said that the best way for us to do it would be to study the broad context (Freeman Pedia, PR), rather than studying the little details. My personal recommendation on what to study would be to play the Civ Six game which is now free on the app store (first 60 turns). I think a lot could be learned during that time. After this, we moved forward onto organizing the CCOT LEQ. Essentially, you need either two continuities and one change, or two changes and one continuity for the essay. It's also recommended your thesis be around 3 sentences so you get the whole point. We spent most of class going into examples of these, so not much to blog about. I find it kind of interesting how all of our teachers say not to procrastinate, yet nearly every one of them waited until the end of the six weeks to drop all these tests on us...huh. Anyways though, onl

Day 90 - Chapter 15 Reading Quiz

Today in WHAP we took our reading quiz over Chapter 15. We started class off by going over the CCOT skills needed for the reading quizzes. I personally think that we could have taken 5 minutes away from the debate yesterday and talked about this instead of wasting review time today, but oh well. The quiz wasn't too bad, but as always Mr. Profitt's scourge against me was those darn MC questions, dragging down my grade as usual. Get some rest this weekend to prepare for the upcoming week. With that, the bell rang and we were dismissed. Until Monday!

Day 89 - Talk History

Today in WHAP we had a talk history day. At the end of today's class, Mr. Profitt was going over some of the blogs in this period, and notably he quickly mentioned mine (www.whapjack.blogspot.com) and Garretts (Daily WHAP Commentary). After a solid 30 seconds or so, he finally thought of Asher's blog, as an afterthought. Afterthought Asher, a suitable nickname for the person and the blog.  For today's entry, I'm going to mainly go over the debate by providing my version of the transcript. You will see my comments in red while the transcript will be the default. The debate started off with Garrett, as it usually does, with him saying that being Eurocentric is more than giving and overemphasizing examples from European places, but the idea that Europe is inherently better.  Will Nickols than said how he felt tat the reason we look at Europe with more depth is because they are changing the most. I agree with this, and it's clearly shown in what we study in class

Day 88 - Butcher's Paper

Today in WHAP we researched information on our given topics. My group had the topic of the Protestant Reformation. Essentially what we did was find the causes of the Reformation and the effects. The causes I had centered around political/religious effects, as we divided up the work between the four of us at the table. I said that one of the effects was the transfer of religious power from solely the Church to more of the people. When Martin Luther questioned the church, many people also separated themselves from the church because of what he was saying. Furthermore, his translation of the bible into the commonly spoken language only increased the separation from the church by many, choosing to join or form new branches based of their own interpretations. Eventually, this whole mess led to the peasant rebellions in Europe. These rebellions sparked massive destruction of churches in new radical beliefs, general widespread destruction, and high death tolls. Nearly 100,000 people d

Day 87 - The 45 Minute Clicker Quiz

Today in WHAP we took a clicker quiz. We started off class by preparing for the clicker quiz in table teams. We then took the quiz. The quiz was over the Protestant Reformation, so we talked about Martin Luther, who was a friar at the time. An interesting fact about him was that he converted to a friar because he was struck by lightning... He also was OCD and was originally quite intent upon being the perfect priest, making sure to not have any un-pure thoughts. He was mad about the selling of indulgences, which essentially would allow one to buy penance for their sins, and guarantee time off of purgatory, a guarantee which they couldn't even make. He made his 95 thesis, the church got mad, the whole affair was publicized by the printing press, and essentially many new branches of religion were formed, especially after his translation of the bible was made available for common folk. The quiz was pretty difficult for a clicker quiz, and I don't think we got the bonus.

Day 86 - Renaissance man

Today in WHAP we took a clicker quiz. We started of today with new seats, which I'm pretty pleased with, as I no longer must crane my head to see. We then delved into the Renaissance Man song as we prepared for our clicker quiz. After that, we started talking about the Renaissance, specifically the Italian Renaissance first. The Italian Renaissance started in 1300, with a re-ignition of Greco-Roman culture. This time was defined by rich merchants, the power and prominence of the church, rationalism (I knew what it meant, just was mentally zoned out :( ), and humanism. This then led into the Northern Renaissance, in 1500. This period was defined by anger at the church because of its corruption , general piety among the populace, and resentment towards the Italians. To explain this resentment, the English/Germans/French didn't like them because they were the middle man between them and India. To put this in a modern-day example, this is why no one really likes nasty sneake

Day 85 - Reading Quiz

Today in WHAP we took the reading quiz over chaper 14. We spent the first part of class going over CCOT arguments, and to summarize that you just have to show the change, how it affected whoever, and what they did. After that, we took the quiz. I felt pretty good about the quiz and was pleased with our key term, so I have a feeling this will be a decent grade. For HW, we have a CC video. With that, the bell rang and we were dismissed. Until Monday!

Day 84 - Yo, what's up?

Today in WHAP we took a clicker quiz. We started WHAP today by listening to Amazing Grace, and to our classes credit we have two people in the class who knew the origin story of the song/had seen the movie "Amazing Grace." Nothing to see here, just 6th period outshining the rest of the classes once again. After that, we moved on to start a lecture, after Mr. Profitt gave a brief but well said speech on how we may not get to the crash course clicker quiz because the other stuff we were learning about was more important in the grand scheme of things and that if we couldn't get to the quiz then everyone would get 100s. A silent cheer quickly and quietly erupted over the classroom, thinking that all we'd have to do is ask some good questions and stall for time, and we'd walk away with free 100s. Boy where we wrong. Mr. Profitt started his lecture and then noticed Patee talking to Nickols, and asked if they had something to say. Patee responded by saying that he
