Day 83 - Beef

Today in WHAP we continued the lecture on economics.

First, at the beginning of class, Will (Nickols) and Mr. Profitt started arguing about the merits of the thesis. It seemed like they'd been talking about the topic before as the debate seemed to get quite heated considering exactly what they were talking about. Essentially, Nickols point was that it wasn't useful because it basically cut out the influence of Asia, which was a pretty big deal. Mr. Profitt than argued that while that may be true, it's still important to use the divisions given and reserve judgement as this was just one guy's opinion on the thesis. I'd use the office meme where they're pointing fingers at each other, but I've already used it before so by the transitive property, it's stale.

After this, we continued talking about the core regions and peripheral societies, which this circle chart from the presentation illustrates well. Then, we talked about how around 1100 Europe starts slowly and greasily shifting away from the land-based economy it was during the "Dark Ages". Mr. Profitt also mentioned how during this time the church had more power than the monarchy/nobles. This was partly attributed to the popes of the time ruling like monarchs by taking wives, having heirs, and setting up these heirs for the papacy or other ruling positions. We then shifted to talking about mercantilism. Essentially, engaging in this philosophy or lifestyle would be to import and export equally, ruthlessly tax with tariffs, embargoes, and then subsidize. This "taxation without representation" eventually leads to the revolution which freed 'Merica from the British. Then, we moved onto Capitalism. Engaging in this philosophy would be allowing the process of free trade and idea sharing to happen, which mercantilism doesn't permit. To support this, Mr. Profitt used the example of Profitt hand-crafted clickers. He asked if anyone in the class wanted one, to which one or two meager souls raised their hands. The point he was trying to make was that you only make something if you can heavily profit off of it. In this case, he would not have profitted off the sale of his clickers unless he made some sort of offer where the purchase of a clicker would gift one 50 O-Points...

Then, Mr. Profitt talked about how the current state of the US is more like communism than anything else, in that if we see one of our chums out on the street because his harvest died, and he has nothing to eat/sell, we'll help that person, not really expecting to be reimbursed for that action. Another example would be when a pal buys your ticket to the movies because you "forgot" your ticket money, and he doesn't really expect to be paid back for that; hence communism. For the record, I always pay people back for movie tickets they buy me so... if I ever see you at the local theater and need some quick cash for a ticket, don't worry; you'll see it again soon.

With that, the bell rang and we were dismissed. Until Tomorrow!

P.S. - I hope all of you guys in WHAP this year decide to stay in the AP program and take up APUSH next year as juniors. Rest be assured that if there are O-Points involved, World History AP will return as www.apushjack.blogspot.com next year.
